Four upgrades for your Dedica

Start with fresh beans, a grinder and a scale. Add a portafilter and matching tamper when you are ready for a single-wall basket. Buy only what you need.

01 / GRIND

An espresso-capable grinder

KINGrinder K6 or Baratza Encore ESP

Fresh grinding gives you control over flow and flavor. Choose one grinder: the K6 for manual grinding, or the Encore ESP for electric grinding.

KINGrinder K6

Baratza Encore ESP

Fit and buying notes

Choose the ESP model, not the standard Encore. For US outlets, buy the local 120 V version. Use a dosing cup and a suitable funnel for your 51 mm basket.

Bottomless portafilter and filter basketAI
02 / EXTRACT

A bottomless 51 mm portafilter

Normcore Bottomless Portafilter

A single-wall basket lets you control extraction through grind size. An open base helps reveal uneven flow.

Fit and buying notes

Select the 51 mm, three-ear version explicitly listed for De’Longhi Dedica EC680 / EC685 / EC885. Do not substitute La Specialista or two-ear versions. Verify the included basket and its dose range.

Stainless steel espresso tamperAI
03 / TAMP

A tamper that fits your basket

Normcore Tamper V4 · 51 mm

The leveling ring helps keep your tamp straight. A spring makes preparation easier to repeat.

Fit and buying notes

Match the tamper to the inside diameter of your actual basket. IMS specifies 51 mm for the DL2TH24E. A well-fitting manual tamper is a lower-cost alternative.

Compact coffee scale with an espresso cupAI
04 / WEIGH

A coffee scale with a timer

Wacaco Exagram

Weigh both the ground coffee and the espresso in the cup. This helps you understand changes to your grind setting.

Fit and buying notes

Check clearance for both scale and cup. The Exagram measures 77 × 124 × 24 mm and needs two AAA batteries. Keep the scale clear of the machine body.

CHECK THE FIT

Diameter alone is not enough

Portafilter: Choose 51 mm, three ears, and explicit compatibility with your Dedica model. Do not assume every Dedica-family machine takes the same accessories.

Basket and tamper: Match the tamper to the actual basket. Check its height, rim, capacity and fit inside the portafilter. Never force a basket into place.

Electrical products: US machines and electric grinders need the appropriate voltage and plug. Do not order a European 230 V version for a US outlet.

Distribution and workflow

Normcore WDT V2.1

Break up clumps and distribute grounds before tamping. Check the needle specification of the exact version.

As needed

51 mm dosing funnel

Keeps grounds in the basket. Check the rim and fit.

As needed

IMS DL2TH24E basket

Optional precision basket, 24 mm high. IMS lists 14–16.5 g for medium roasts. Confirm fit before buying.

As needed

Thin 51 mm puck screen

Can help keep the shower screen cleaner. Leave enough headroom and clean after every shot.

As needed

Tamping mat

A small silicone mat protects your counter.

As needed

Compact knock box

Makes cleanup easier; it does not improve extraction.

As needed

Airtight coffee container

Useful when the original coffee bag does not reseal well.

Water hardness and filtration

Water hardness test strips

Measure total hardness and use the result to set the machine according to its manual.

As needed

Hardness-reducing water filter

If your water is hard, choose a filter explicitly rated to reduce hardness. A taste-and-odor filter alone may not do this. Follow replacement intervals and keep descaling.

Milk steaming

Milk pitcher · about 12 oz / 350 ml

A stainless steel pitcher with a spout helps you steam and pour. Learn the stock steam wand first.

As needed

Clip-on milk thermometer

Helps you judge milk temperature while steaming.

Cleaning and descaling

De’Longhi EcoDecalk

Follow your EC685M manual and the descaler instructions for dose, cycle and rinsing.

As needed

Brush and barista cloth

Clean loose grounds from your grinder and work surface. Keep a separate clean cloth for the steam wand.

As needed

Keep the essentials in perspective

A spinning distributor, vacuum container or puck screen is not a requirement for good espresso. Fresh beans, grind adjustment and consistent preparation matter most. This guide does not require modifications to pressure controls, electrical parts or the steam wand.

TASTE, THEN ADJUST

Your first espresso recipe

A starting point for a medium roast in a single-wall double basket rated for this dose.

16 g

Ground coffee in

32 g

Espresso out

25–35 s

Approximate shot time

A 1:2 brew ratio. Match the dose to your basket. Time consistently from pump start, including pre-infusion. Do not transfer the 16 g dose blindly to the stock pressurized basket.

  1. 01

    Preheat.

Warm the machine and portafilter, run a blank shot, warm the cup and dry the basket.

  2. 02

    Weigh, grind, distribute.

Grind 16 g fresh, distribute evenly and tamp straight and firmly once.

  3. 03

    Stop by weight.

Tare the cup on the scale and stop near 32 g, allowing for the last drips.

  4. 04

    Taste. Change one thing.

Too fast and thin? Try a finer grind. Barely dripping? Try coarser. Taste matters more than hitting an exact number of seconds.

Brew-ratio principle: La Marzocco Home. The recipe is an adjustable starting point, not a product-test result.

QUICK ANSWERS

Before you upgrade

Is this the same model as the European EC685?

The EC685M is marketed in the US as Dedica DeLuxe. Buy the local electrical version. Always check accessory compatibility with your exact model; regional naming does not guarantee that every listing fits.

Can I use pre-ground coffee?

The stock pressurized basket is more forgiving with pre-ground coffee. A single-wall basket needs a suitable grind that you can adjust, so upgrade your grinder first.

Will accessories turn it into a different machine?

Accessories improve control and repeatability, but do not change the heating or steaming system. Very light roasts and several milk drinks in a row can still be challenging.

How should I clean it?

Clean the basket and portafilter after use. Wipe and flush the steam wand as directed by the manual. Set the water hardness and follow the EC685M descaling instructions. Do not borrow blind-basket backflushing routines from other machines.
